On 16th September, 2026, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Republic of Benin, H.E. Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim, paid a courtesy visit to the Mayor of Cotonou, Mr. Luc Gnacadja, as part of the Embassy’s efforts to deepen engagement with relevant authorities in the Republic of Benin.
During the meeting, Ambassador Adeola-Ibrahim underscored the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, noting that both countries are connected not only by geography, but also by deep historical, cultural, familial and commercial ties. She emphasised that these enduring bonds provide a strong foundation for greater cooperation at both national and local levels.
The Ambassador highlighted the strategic importance of Cotonou as Benin’s principal economic and commercial centre and a major point of interaction between citizens and businesses of both countries. She noted that the close links between Cotonou, Lagos and other Nigerian cities continue to facilitate trade, transportation, tourism, education, professional activities and people-to-people exchanges.
Discussions also explored opportunities for strengthening cooperation between the Embassy and the Municipality of Cotonou, particularly through greater interaction between Nigerian and Cotonou-based business communities, cultural and educational exchanges, as well as enhanced coordination on matters affecting Nigerian nationals residing, working or conducting legitimate business activities in the city.
Ambassador Adeola-Ibrahim reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to maintaining constructive engagement with the municipal authorities and promoting the welfare and legitimate interests of Nigerian nationals. She equally reiterated the Embassy’s continued encouragement of Nigerians in Cotonou to respect the laws of the Republic of Benin and contribute positively to the development of their host communities.
The visit further reflects the Embassy’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria–Benin relations through sustained engagement at different levels of government and translating the longstanding friendship between both countries into practical cooperation for the benefit of their peoples.
